How to Care for and Maintain Your Timber Floor

Timber flooring is one of the most beautiful and enduring investments you can make in your home. But like anything worth having, it needs a bit of looking after. The good news is that with a simple routine, a timber floor can last decades and actually improve in character over time.

Here’s our straightforward guide from the team at Top Notch Flooring in Warragul.

Day to Day Cleaning

The most important thing you can do for a timber floor is keep it free of grit and dirt. Fine particles act like sandpaper underfoot and will dull the finish over time.

  • Sweep or vacuum regularly — use a soft broom or a vacuum on the hard floor setting (never a beater bar, it will scratch the surface)
  • Wipe up spills immediately — timber and moisture don’t mix, don’t let liquid sit on the surface
  • Use a lightly damp mop occasionally — never a wet mop, excess water will damage timber over time
  • Avoid harsh chemical cleaners — stick to pH neutral timber floor cleaners, avoid anything with ammonia or bleach

Protecting Your Floor

A little prevention goes a long way:

  • Felt pads under furniture legs — this is one of the easiest and most effective things you can do, replace them when they wear out
  • Rugs in high traffic areas — hallways, living rooms and dining areas benefit from rugs to reduce wear
  • Take shoes off at the door — particularly heels, which concentrate enormous pressure on a tiny point and can dent timber
  • Keep pet nails trimmed — long claws will scratch timber over time
  • Use a doormat — catches grit before it gets onto the floor

Dealing with Sunlight

UV exposure will fade and discolour timber floors over time, particularly in north-facing rooms. A few simple steps help:

  • Use blinds or curtains during peak sun hours
  • Consider UV-filtering window film on problem windows
  • Move rugs occasionally so the floor fades evenly rather than leaving a patch

Seasonal Care

Timber is a natural product and it moves with changes in humidity and temperature — this is completely normal. In Gippsland our seasons can bring significant changes in both.

  • In winter when heating dries the air, small gaps between boards may appear — this is normal and they’ll close again in summer
  • Avoid dramatic temperature fluctuations — don’t crank the heating from cold to very hot repeatedly
  • A humidifier in winter can help maintain stable conditions if you have underfloor heating

When to Resand and Refinish

One of the great advantages of solid timber flooring is that it can be sanded back and refinished when it starts to show its age. Signs it’s time:

  • The finish looks dull and scratched even after cleaning
  • There are visible scratches or dents that bother you
  • The colour has faded unevenly

Most solid timber floors can be sanded and refinished multiple times over their life. Engineered timber can usually be done once or twice depending on the veneer thickness. Talk to our team about what’s possible with your specific floor.

What to Avoid

  • Steam mops — the heat and moisture will damage the finish and can cause warping
  • Vinegar or lemon juice — commonly suggested online but acidic cleaners strip timber finishes
  • Wet mopping — even once can cause swelling and damage
  • Rubber-backed mats — they can trap moisture and discolour the timber underneath

Need Advice?

Every timber floor is a little different depending on the species, finish, and age. If you’re unsure about the best way to care for your specific floor, or if it’s time for a resand and refinish, come in and talk to our team. We’re happy to take a look and give you an honest assessment.
